About the author

National Observer is a new publication founded by Linda Solomon Wood and an award-winning team of journalists in response to the close relationship between the oil industry and media in Canada, and the urgency of climate change. National Observer focuses on news and in-depth reports on under-covered Canadian stories in the area of climate, energy, and related culture, business and politics. It was launched in May 2015 by Observer Media Group (OMG), which also owns Vancouver Observer.

Seed funding for National Observer came from a Kickstarter campaign, 'Reports from the Energy Battlegrounds' in February 2015. Since its inception in May 2015, National Observer has provided intensive, critical coverage of the oil industry, politics, corporate corruption, and much more.

We also highlight inspired business innovations and lifestyle hacks that build sustainability and resilience and help in the transition away from fossil fuels.

We provide our talented reporters days, weeks, sometimes even months, to do the investigative reporting that is vital to democracy.

Investigative Journalism leads to Energy East pipeline process being declared void

January 27, 2017

Good day.

I wanted to let you know that the Energy East pipeline process was just declared void due to revelations uncovered by National Observer last year that illuminated a deceptive and dysfunctional oversight process.  This wouldn't have happened without the time and skill of Managing Editor Mike De Souza, who uncovered the story, thanks to a series of Freedom of Information requests and hours of time examining documents.  Mike stuck with the investigation for many months. And, here we are today.

So, please consider subscribing to the National Observer today, and I promise you, we'll use the money to deliver you more hard-hitting reporting like this.  On issues that really matter.

You’ll fund Mike's investigative team to dive deeper, to dig into more leads coming from whistleblowers. It’s such a critical time in the world. And, Canada desperately needs quality journalism to defend our democracy from Trump-style propaganda, climate denial and intolerance.

Quality investigative journalism has never been more important.

Warm Regards,

Linda Solomon Wood,
Editor-in-chief, National Observer
