Jewish group urges government to increase security at Canadian synagogues after Manchester attack

A prominent Canadian Jewish organization is calling on “leaders of all levels” to enhance security at synagogues after a vehicle and knife attack at a U.K. synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to ensure Jewish institutions are protected and that all who “incite and commit violence against Canadians are held accountable.”

The Alberta government is invoking the Charter’s notwithstanding clause in back-to-work legislation that will force public school teachers to return to class after a three-week strike, a move that organized labour leaders said could cause an “unprecedented response” by unions across the province. If passed, the bill would use the notwithstanding clause, which allows governments to shield legislation from Charter challenges in court, to override Alberta teachers’ Charter right to strike or bargain collectively.
