Ottawa Now - How will Carney's 'Buy Canadian' policy impact Canada's economy?

September 5, 2025

Prime Minister Mark Carney has invented a ‘Buy Canadian’ procurement policy, and we should see it in action by 2026. This means that the federal government will be buying from Canadian suppliers, as domestic providers hit the bench. Furthermore, the feds plan to extend this approach to all federal funding streams, while also providing a roadmap for provinces and municipalities to apply similar procurement standards. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre was quick to criticize Carney’s approach, describing it as an ‘all-show, no-go’ on policy and progress. How will these federal contracting dollars impact our economy as a whole? Pedro Antunes, a Chief Economist with the Conference Board of Canada, joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
