Ontario appeals ruling to halt bike-lane removals

August 22, 2025

Ontario has filed to appeal a court ruling that deemed Premier Doug Ford’s move to rip out bike lanes on three major Toronto streets unconstitutional, arguing the judge in the case made multiple errors when he found that the legislation endangered cyclists and violated their Charter rights.

In a court document filed with the Ontario Court of Appeal, lawyers for the province’s Attorney-General argue that Ontario Superior Court Justice Paul Schabas went too far, misinterpreting the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and ignoring evidence provided by the government.
