Ontario labour group urges more worker protections amid rising air quality concerns

An Ontario labour group says it is advocating for more robust worker protections amid growing health concerns over poor air quality as wildfire smoke blankets the province with increasing frequency.

The Ontario Federation of Labour, which represents more than 55 unions across the province, says the push is part of a broader heat stress strategy looking at how climate change is impacting working conditions.

The Supreme Court of Canada has decided not to hear an appeal of lower-court rulings that deemed a stretch of Sauble Beach, Ont., to be within the local Saugeen First Nation reserve, in a case some lawyers say could have broad implications for private property owners caught up in Indigenous land claims. The top court announced on Thursday that it would not grant the local municipality, the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, and a handful of affected landowners leave to appeal the decision, which had been upheld by the Ontario Court of Appeal last year.
