BC Ferries pushes for swift approval of $1-billion shipbuilding contract amid tariff threats

February 22, 2025
The uncertain impact of looming U.S. tariffs on global markets has prompted B.C.’s publicly owned ferry commission to appeal to its regulator to swiftly approve a massive shipbuilding contract.BC Ferries – one of the largest and most complex ferry systems in the world – solicited bids last year from international shipyards to build five large new ships to serve its major routes. The project will be the corporation’s single largest overhaul in its 65-year history. The price has not been released, but officials confirm it would total more than $1-billion.
