Alberta’s government is planning to set new standards for school libraries by the fall, prohibiting books that the province deems age-inappropriate because of what it says is explicit sexual content. Demetrios Nicolaides, the province’s education and childcare minister, said Monday that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s government has found inconsistent standards among school libraries. That‘s why schools boards are forced to take different approaches to the books available for kindergarten to Grade 12 students, without strong enough safeguards in place, he said.
