O ne morning in late March, I received a message from a former colleague. It included pictures of a media worker in Afghanistan who had been tortured by the Taliban, his ears sliced through and his body covered in wounds. The media worker had been freed from prison, but his father had just died, and my friend was appealing to his contacts for help with the funeral expenses.
