Ottawa Now - While admitting Ford's strategy was an interesting approach, former Foreign Affairs Minister has mixed emotions with the end result

October 27, 2025

U.S. President Trump has called off trade discussions with Canada until further notice over a series of anti-tariff ads. They were created by the Ontario government, and launched on American airwaves this weekend during the World Series. Trump’s furious tone hasn’t changed despite the Premier’s insistence that the ads would be pulled on Monday, which they ultimately were. In any event, Doug Ford is calling these ads a success, as they captured the attention of American viewers and top politicians. How would you grade this gameplan from Ontario’s head honcho? Was it actually the right strategic move to make? Kristy Cameron posed that question to former Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay, who served that role for multiple years under the Stephen Harper government. And while he admits it was an interesting approach, he isn’t a fan of how it was received by America’s top officials. Furthermore, he questions if the present-day Prime Minister was aware of Ontario’s gameplan to unveil these ads, not to mention when they would be released on American airwaves.
