Ottawa Now - Premier Ford strikes a nerve with Ontario's youngest employees

September 10, 2025

Following a tirade on the overall effectiveness and purpose of photo radar cameras, Ontario’s Premier has raised some eyebrows on a different topic. That would be youth employment. He says some people have called his office, complaining that work for today’s teenagers and early-twenties applicants is hard to find. His response in a nutshell: If you look hard enough, you will find work. That triggered a lot of furious responses online, which collectively called Doug Ford’s reply a tone-deaf remark. Ilona Dougherty is the co-creator of the Youth and Innovation Project at the University of Waterloo. It studies the social, environmental, and economic impacts that today’s youngest employees have on organizations, communities, and systems. It also studies how today’s economic shifts have impacted employment numbers for the 15-to-25 demographic. She joins Kristy Cameron on today’s Ottawa Now.
