Hockey Canada’s probe into sexual assault allegations scrutinized by defence lawyer at trial
May 20, 2025
A defence lawyer representing one of five former members of Canada’s world junior hockey team on trial for an alleged 2018 sexual assault asserted in court on Tuesday that Hockey Canada was on a “rampage” to get players to divulge details about the night in question during an internal investigation three years ago.Juliana Greenspan, who is representing Cal Foote, criticized Hockey Canada’s investigation while cross-examining Tyler Steenbergen, a former member of the 2018 world junior team who is not accused of criminal wrongdoing. Mr. Steenbergen was testifying as a Crown witness about the alleged assault of a woman in a downtown London, Ont., hotel in June 2018, following a night of drinking and dancing at a local bar.
On Thursday, the government rejected a call to declare intimate partner violence and epidemic but restarted a committee which had been studying the topic since last year.
