Manitoba government eyes human rights protection for gender expression

The Manitoba government plans to expand the province’s human rights code to cover gender expression.The code already prohibits discrimination based on gender identity, and the NDP government says adding gender expression will bring Manitoba in line with most other provinces.

The Manitoba NDP has won a provincial by-election to hold onto the east Winnipeg riding of Transcona.The by-election was held to fill the seat formerly held by Nello Altomare, the Manitoba education minister who died in January.Shannon Corbett, a vice-principal, won for the New Democrats with more than 3,600 votes.
