Recently, people have increasingly been using the term “unhoused” instead of “homeless" to discuss those without a roof over their heads. At a quick glance, this change looks like many other important linguistic changes of the past decade as we move away from microaggressive language against marginalized groups. For example, no more “he or she” as if there were only two options; using “guys” to refer to mixed-gender groups of people; “blind” to mean ignorant or stubborn, or “darkness” to only mean evil.
