B.C. Supreme Court certifies province’s class-action lawsuit against opioid providers

British Columbia’s attorney general says the province’s Supreme Court has certified the government’s class-action lawsuit against opioid manufacturers and distributors.Niki Sharma says B.C. can now proceed as a representative plaintiff on behalf of other Canadian governments with the litigation aimed at recovering the costs of treating opioid-related diseases allegedly caused by the industry’s conduct.
Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi has been acclaimed as the party’s candidate in Edmonton-Strathcona.Nenshi didn’t face any competition for the nomination and, if elected, would become the third NDP leader to represent the riding.It’s the latest hurdle for the former Calgary mayor to get a seat in the legislature after he took the helm of the Opposition party in June.
